Baume-les-Messieurs
Most Beautiful Village — limestone cirque
Tucked at the foot of a spectacular limestone amphitheatre, Baume-les-Messieurs is one of France's "Most Beautiful Villages". A 6th-century Benedictine abbey, listed caves, waterfalls, ochre cliffs — one of the Jura's most breathtaking sites.

What awaits you
You drive down into the cirque, the cliffs close in around the village, and time slows. The abbey has been here for fifteen centuries. This is the deep Jura.

Benedictine abbey
Founded in the 6th century, listed as a historic monument. Cloister, abbey church, 15th-century Flemish altarpiece — guided tours available on site.
Baume caves
Underground trail through limestone caves with stalactites, stalagmites and a subterranean lake. Around 45 min. Pre-booking recommended in summer.
The cirque and viewpoints
Hiking trails above the village offer vertiginous views of the cliffs and the village below. Allow 1.5–3 hours depending on the route.
Cuisance waterfalls
Upstream from the village, the Cuisance river forms several accessible waterfalls. A 20-min detour from the abbey.
Practical info
- Getting there
- Car essential — no direct public transport from Lons. Parking at the village entrance (paid in high season).
- Tip
- Arrive early or on weekdays — the village is narrow and parking limited. The caves are cool year-round: bring a layer.
Combine with
On the way to Baume, stop at Château-Chalon for a Vin Jaune, or continue to the Cascades du Hérisson for a natural circuit.
In bad weather
The Baume caves are fully underground — ideal in bad weather, rain changes nothing about the visit. The abbey is also sheltered. Avoid the cliff viewpoint trails, which become slippery. An unexpected bonus: the caves are quieter on wet days.
