Cascades du Hérisson
Forest & waterfalls — nature hike
The Hérisson is a highland Jura river tumbling through 31 waterfalls across just 4 km between the lakes of Ilay and Bonlieu. A marked forest trail follows the falls — from l'Éventail up to the Grand Saut, the tallest waterfall, deep in a beech and fir forest.

What awaits you
You hear the water before you see it. The forest cools the air immediately. Then the Grand Saut appears around a bend in the trail — stunning, every season.

Practical info
- Getting there
- Car essential. Parking at Bonlieu (lower start, recommended) or Ilay (upper start). No public transport.
- Tip
- Arrive early in summer — Bonlieu car park fills up on weekend mornings. Hiking boots required (rocks, mud). Bring water and a packed lunch.
Combine with
Continue to Lac de Chalain (20 min from Bonlieu) for an afternoon swim, or detour through Baume-les-Messieurs on your way back.
In bad weather
The waterfalls are even more spectacular in rain — powerful flow and dramatic mist. The trail gets slippery: waterproof boots and a rain jacket are essential. In heavy rain, stay on the built viewpoint platforms and keep back from the rock edges near the falls.
